LOUISIANA, Mo. – Fifty years as pastor in the same church is quite an accomplishment! Though some pastors have been in the ministry for 50 years, not many stay in the same congregation for half a century. Charles Moore, who is 87 years old, was honored on his 50 year anniversary by his church, association and friends earlier in August. Noix Creek Baptist Church, Louisiana, organized the celebration which was a surprise to Pastor Moore. Churches in the area and the Salt River Baptist … [Read more...]

Independence church becomes smaller, leaner, more effective
INDEPENDENCE (BP) – Ten years ago Brian Grout accepted a call to be the pastor for what would soon become The Church at Three Trails. Approximately 200 people were on the membership role. That number has dropped by half since then. On the surface it can appear to be a negative, but the surface hardly tells the whole story. When Grout arrived, the church hadn’t baptized anyone in at least five years, but there have been approximately 55 since. Attendance hovered at 15 to start. Now it is … [Read more...]

MODR responds to derecho storm in northern Missouri
BETHANY – Until a few years ago, most people had never heard of a derecho (deh-REY-cho), even though the term dates back to 1877 when it was first used to describe an unusual wind event in Iowa. If wind damage wasn’t caused by a tornado or a hurricane, it has generally been blamed on a strong, straight-line wind. In fact, the word “derecho” is Spanish for “straight.” Today, the term, which has been used more frequently in the last 10 to 20 years, is, by definition, a wind damage swath that … [Read more...]

HLGU student earns associate’s degree 50 years in the making
HANNIBAL – Wes Segawa completed one class this past semester at Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLG) and graduated with an associate degree in May. That’s the short of a 50-year-long story. The one class was what he lacked for the degree he started in the early 1970s. Segawa, of Hilo, Hawaii, graduated from Hilo in 1970. Like many Asian immigrants in the Hawaiian islands, he grew up a fourth-generation Buddhist. Rev. Richard Uejo, a Hawaiian pastor and 1940 graduate with his wife Masue, led … [Read more...]
